Arize: Creating Value Beyond 3D Printers and Materials

Arize by HP is transforming the field of orthotics with a seamless and automated digital platform. Designed to address inefficiencies in traditional orthotic fabrication, Arize integrates advanced 3D scanning and printing technologies to deliver custom foot orthotics tailored to individual needs. The platform emphasises usability, accessibility, and scalability to create impact for clinicians and consumers alike.

My Role

As a key contributor, I partnered with the 3D printing team to align technical capabilities with user needs. I contributed to the research efforts to uncover pain points and expectations of both clinicians and patients. Additionally, I led the wireframing process for Arize’s online presence, ensuring an intuitive and cohesive user experience.

Challenge

Orthotic fabrication has long been associated with outdated methods that are labor-intensive, prone to error, and often inconsistent in quality. Patients frequently experience a lack of comfort and compatibility with their footwear, while clinicians struggle with complex workflows that demand significant manual effort.


The challenge was to create a solution that simplifies the process, eliminates barriers, and delivers precise, personalized orthotics for various lifestyle needs.

Research

Through a series of interviews with clinicians (podiatrists and orthotists) and patients, key insights emerged:

  1. •  Pain Points Identified:

    • •  Patients experience difficulty engaging in physical activities due to chronic pain.

    • •  Many existing orthotics are bulky, uncomfortable, or incompatible with stylish or specialized footwear.

  2. •  Insights from Clinicians:

    • •  Manual processes increase lead times and risk of inaccuracies.

    • •  There is a need for intuitive tools that reduce dependency on technical skills.

  3. •  Themes:

    • •  Widespread enthusiasm for the potential of mobile 3D scanning to improve precision and ease.

    • •  General acceptance that custom orthotics offer superior comfort and fit.

Design Framework

The design journey focused on creating an intuitive platform that automates the transition from scanning to design and production. Key principles included:

  1. •  User-Centric Design: Developed low-fidelity wireframes emphasizing simplicity and usability. The design minimized interaction complexity while ensuring accuracy.

  2. •  Automation & Customization:

    • •  Integrated a scan-to-design-to-print workflow for seamless transitions.

    • •  Tailored orthotics for diverse footwear categories:

      • •  Stylish Flats: Thin, unobtrusive insoles.

      • •  Athletic Shoes: Performance-enhancing options.

      • •  Work Boots: Durable and flexible designs.

Scalability: Ensured compatibility with clinics of varying sizes, while establishing a roadmap for expansion into other orthotic needs, including knee and back solutions.

Direct-to-consumer (D2C) Purchase Journey

In addition to supporting clinicians, we expanded the platform to include a D2C model for individual consumers. Drawing from our experience with the platform, we designed a streamlined and user-friendly interface for the D2C journey.
